Gospel

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is the greatest story ever told because it brings with it the only path to Everlasting Life with God.

  • What is the Gospel?

    • Rest-assured, for eternity we will deepen in our understanding of the implications of the Gospel. Here are a few things to help you get started.

  • The Gospel is the good news of Jesus Christ. Paul tells us precisely what the Gospel is in 1 Corinthians 15 :1-6:

"Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you                 are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first                         importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was                raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared              to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep."

  • We learn 4 key things about the Gospel from these verses.

    • 1. It (the Gospel) is the means by which we are being saved.  So, without hearing and believing in the Gospel we cannot be saved.

    • 2. Because of our sin, Jesus had to die (sacrifice Himself in our place).

    • 3. Jesus rose from the grave, beating death- proving He was God and what He said is true and actually works.

    • 4. The resurrection is an actual historical event.

  • J.I. Packer sums up the Gospel like this, "GOD - SAVES - SINNERS"

    • God - There is a God and He is holy, perfectly good, and just in all His ways.

    • Saves and Sinners - The Gospel is good news, that is why you cannot share the Gospel without sharing the bad news. The bad news that we must proclaim, is that we are not at peace with God because of sin in our life that has not been dealt with. He is good, we are not.  This is what the bible means when it tells us that, "all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23), and the punishment that we deserve for our sin is enmity (not having peace) with God, and death (the result of sin which leads to judgement). No man or woman has the ability to come to God on their own, because we are dead in our sin. However, Jesus the Messiah (Saviour) has come and taken the punishment for the sin of all those who believe in Him.  That is, when we believe though faith in Jesus we are banking on the fact that what He did actually counts for us.  Simply put, what do we have to do in order to be saved?  Jesus simply said to believe in Him (John 6:29). He already did the work.

    • When we truly believe in Jesus, we repent of our sins by becoming His disciple, following in His footsteps, and choosing Him as our example and our King for the rest of our lives.
