Worship

"Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship."  - Romans 12:1

In "Grow" we learn about God and His ways. In worship we put what we've learned thankfully and faithfully into practice.  Christian Worship starts when one realizes that all we are and have is from God; from every possession to the very breath in our lungs. From our lungs, themselves, to our entire bodies. When we realize that all these things are not only from God but belong to God, we begin to act like stewards and not owners. Worship boils down to active obedience. To worship God is to offer our entire existence to God, as He uses us according to His desire.

"For worship is, essentially, the reverse of sin. Sin began (and begins) when we succumb to the temptation, "You shall be as gods." We make ourselves the center of the universe and dethrone God. By contrast, worship is giving God his true worth; it is acknowledging Him to be the Lord of all things, and the Lord of everything in our lives. He is, indeed, the Most High God!"  - Sinclair B. Ferguson

Instruments of Mercy (lyrics)

- Beautiful Eulogy

Worship God by:
  • Praising Him with the Breath He Gave you

    • When we sing songs of praise to God we should sing truths about God and not our feelings about Him. Those truths will produce in us emotion, emotion based on truth is righteous. To the Praise of His Grace! - https://youtu.be/-ShvJXcMxvI

    • We constantly grow by learning about God so that we can praise Him in the way He desires to be praised; to offer an acceptable praise.  Having a biblical theology of worship is important. Not everything that is called “worship” is actually worship, a lesson learned in the very beginning: both Cain and Abel brought sacrifices to the Lord, but “the Lord looked with favour on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor” (Genesis 4:4–5). What was Cain’s problem (besides jealousy, stubbornness, and murderous rage)? He lacked a proper theology of worship. Cain brought an unacceptable sacrifice to the Lord and demanded that the Lord be pleased.

  • Giving Him all that is His....which is Everything isn't it?

    • At a solid church, we are on a team and we are going somewhere. We are on the path to advance the Kingdom of God for His Glory!  God does not want your resources if you are doing it just because you think you should. God wants you to realize they are His in the first place, and that we are just stewards of what He gave us. All of our belongings and finances came from God.  He gave us His life. He created our life. In return, shouldn't we gladly give Him everything we have to use for His good pleasure? In doing so, we are worshiping Him and thanking Him for what He has done for us and for who He is! Our giving should come from the overwhelming love & respect that we have for God, and Who God Is.

    • 2 Corinthians 9:7 says that, "Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver...And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. As it is written: 'They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor; their righteousness endures forever.'  Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God." It goes on to say in verse 12 that, "This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, others will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else." When we give we become a beacon for people to see that we serve a benevolent God! What do we truly desire for our lives?

"Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be."

Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it. - Proverbs 22:6

- One of the greatest gifts of worship that we can give God is raising our children in a way that honours Him.

- Remember; the verse above is a Proverb, not a promise. A Proverb would only come to pass if we lived in a world without sin.  Since we don't, we honour God through obedience of godly parenting and pray fervently that He will save our children.

- When we determine to raise children God's way, we also worship Him by being a witness to the world through displaying what correct child bearing looks like.

One of the worst mistakes we can make, is to assume that having a child is proof that we know how to be godly parents.  Every parent, every hopeful parent-to-be, and those around children must read,  "Shepherding a Child's Heart by: Tedd Tripp."

Am I teaching and modelling to my kids that Jesus is amazing?

Enjoying and Caring for the natural world:

  • When God made the universe, He deemed it good and charged man to work and keep it (Gen. 2:15).

    • Get out in the nature God created for you. Respect it. Enjoy it. Cultivate it. In doing so you worship God by taking joy in what He has created! You'll see hints of Him all throughout nature. How crazy is that?! What a God we serve! He takes joy in giving us joy!!

    • Only those who attribute creation to God can truly enjoy it.

    • Part of our worship is also caring for our bodies as John says, "I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul." Paul tells us that bodily training is of some use which makes logical sense because our bodies and our Spirit and greatly intertwined.  God made your body and gave you authority over it.  May we always strive to keep God's opinion of our bodies as good.

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own.  1 Cor. 6:19

  • Obediently observing the two Divinely instituted ordinances of the church:

    • 1st Ordinance: Baptism symbolically unites a person with God, his church, and exchanges their citizenship with the world for a heavenly one.  What is Baptism and How important is it? - John Piper

    • 2nd Ordinance: The Lord's Supper is instituted for believers to come together and remember Christ's sacrifice on the cross for our sins, making it possible for His children to be at peace with Him.  What is the Lord's Supper? - J.I. Packer

  • Fasting

    • But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; in those days they will fast." - Jesus (Luke 5:35). When we fast we are asking Jesus to come. Yes, to come and ultimately redeem His people and take back what is His. But also to come into our lives. When we feel the hunger pains we are reminded that He has and will sustain us.  We are reminded to seek the Kingdom before we seek our survival.  An act of faith, saying, "All I need is you, oh, Lord!"
